OpenVPN Connect Vs OpenVPN For Android

OpenVPN Connect, the “official” OpenVPN Inc. app is designed to be more user friendly for VPN users with less technical knowledge. It is therefore less fully featured than openvpn for android which is geared towards more advanced OpenVPN users.

Openvpn for Android Openvpn for Android, a free and open-source client created by Arne Schwarzbe, enables users to connect to any VPN service that supports OpenVPN protocol. If your device isn’t compatible the pre-configured VPN apps available in the Google Play Store, this is an excellent alternative. It’s fairly simple to set up. You’ll need to download the VPN profile files. (The configuration files are named.ovpn). These can be downloaded from your VPN provider’s website or via live chat support.

After you’ve transferred your profile to the app, tap on the server to connect. Once connected you’ll notice that your Internet traffic will be directed through a secure tunnel to the server selected in the application. You can see your connection status and details on the Status tab. A kill switch is activated by default, and it will shut down your Internet connections when the VPN tunnel drops.

The app offers a per-app VPN as in addition to an always-on option that automatically establishes an automatic VPN connection every time the application is opened, and it will continue running after your device has shut down or switched networks. This option however requires Android 7.0 or higher and can drain your battery more than usual.
